Air Rail completes its NextGenerationEU-funded project promoting sustainable mobility at airports

Air Rail has completed project PATSYD-22-00017, developed within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR) and funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU. Thanks to this initiative, the company has modernized its ground support equipment with new equipment designed to improve operational efficiency and advance the reduction of the environmental impact of airport operations.

On December 17, 2025, Air Rail completed its PATSYD-22-00017 project, developed within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR), an initiative aimed at promoting the modernization, digitization, and sustainability of the transport sector in Spain.

The project has been funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU instrument, as part of the Sustainable and Digital Transport Support Program, which aims to promote investments that contribute to the ecological transition, improved operational efficiency, and the modernization of transport systems.

The completion of this initiative represents an important step in Air Rail's strategy to continue moving towards a more innovative and efficient operating model that is aligned with European sustainability objectives.

Modernization and transformation of airport assistance equipment

As part of the project, Air Rail has carried out a major upgrade of its ground support equipment by incorporating new equipment designed to optimize airport operations and reduce the environmental impact of apron activities.

Among the actions carried out, the acquisition of different types of key equipment for daily airport operations stands out, including:

  • Aircraft power units (APUs)
  • Pushback vehicles for aircraft of different weight categories
  • Lifting platforms for operations on narrow-body and wide-body aircraft
  • Buses intended for the transport of passengers on a platform

The incorporation of this equipment represents a significant step forward in the modernization of Air Rail's operational resources. Thanks to this technological upgrade, the company can improve efficiency in aircraft assistance processes, optimize operating times, and contribute to more sustainable management of airport activities.

In addition, the use of more efficient equipment reduces energy consumption and helps to reduce emissions associated with ground operations, an increasingly important issue within the aviation sector.

Investment supported by European funds

The project has received a grant of €4,869,600 to promote the transformation and sustainability of airport operations.

Thanks to this funding, Air Rail has been able to strengthen its operational capacity and continue moving toward a more sustainable, efficient, and technologically advanced transport model, in line with European strategies aimed at decarbonization and modernization of the sector.

Another step forward in the innovation and sustainability strategy

The completion of this project represents a new milestone in Air Rail's innovation strategy. Through initiatives such as this, the company continues to focus on incorporating solutions that contribute to improving the quality of airport operations and promoting a more environmentally responsible model of mobility.

Air Rail will continue to work on developing projects that promote operational efficiency, technological modernization, and sustainability, thereby contributing to the future of airport transportation.

PRM: The importance of an essential service that continues to evolve

Mobility for People with Reduced Mobility (PRM) is an essential service at airports, although it often goes unnoticed. Nuria Placeres' recent reflection reminds us of its importance and invites us to recognize the work of all the teams that make it possible. At Air Rail, we are proud to contribute to the national manufacturing of Ambulifts and PRM equipment present throughout Spain, including our first 100% electric units incorporated in recent months.

New developments in our project with ADIF Alta Velocidad

We moved forward in our project with ADIF Alta Velocidad with the delivery of the first two of six rocker beams. These elements facilitate the handling of pre-assembled switches, improving safety and operational efficiency. After passing the load tests, they are already installed at the Maintenance Base in Monforte del Cid (Alicante). At Air Rail, we continue to promote solutions that strengthen the reliability of high-speed rail.
